Pentaho Announces Software Quality Reports for Bugzilla
New Open Source Project Harnesses World's Most Popular Open Source BI Suite to Enhance Bugzilla with Reporting and Analysis
ORLANDO, Fla.--Sept. 14, 2006--Pentaho Corp., creator of the world's most popular open source business intelligence (BI) suite, today announced the creation of a new open source project called "Software Quality Reports for Bugzilla", an application built on the Pentaho Open BI Suite to provide enhanced reporting and analysis of data from Bugzilla. The new solution gives software development professionals dramatically better insight to improve their quality management processes, and showcases the breadth and power of Pentaho's open source BI capabilities.

Bugzilla is a software defect tracking system that allows software development professionals to file and track resolution of software defects. Bugzilla has quickly achieved worldwide popularity for its rich functionality, and is used by organizations ranging from open source leaders like The Apache Project, Novell, Open Office, and Red Hat to public- and private-sector organizations including NASA, AT&T, Citigroup, GlaxoSmithKline, France Telecom, Rutgers University, Overstock.com, Siemens and more.

This solution represents Pentaho's first analytic solution project, and is one of many opportunities where Pentaho's best-in-class open source BI technology can be applied to real-world problems, adding value on top of other popular open source projects. Designed for maximum embeddability and application portability, Pentaho's solution-oriented architecture makes it easy to package up and distribute business intelligence content from reports and analytic views to data integration mappings and business rules.

The Software Quality Reports for the Bugzilla project overcomes the technical challenges associated with reporting directly from the Bugzilla operational system. For example, Bugzilla tracks the current state of software defects and shows what defects are "open" and "closed", but today it's very difficult to get a view into key questions like how many defects were open at a certain point in time, or how many bugs were closed or opened over a certain period of time. With Software Quality Reports for Bugzilla, users can leverage pre-built reports and analysis to analyze key metrics like average days to resolution, measured by product, by developer, or by severity. This solution will allow users to easily identify trends and respond to these issues in their projects, ultimately improving their quality management process and the quality of the software they deliver. Users can easily extend the solution, allowing them to create their own reports, dashboards, and analytic views of software quality information.

"Bugzilla is an excellent issue tracking system, and Pentaho is thrilled to contribute a full BI solution to open source that provides immediate insight into software quality," said Nicholas Goodman, Director of BI Solutions at Pentaho. "Bugzilla users who are interested in understanding patterns in their bug reports should download and try the solution, and we'd like to invite the Bugzilla community to contribute to the evolution of this exciting new open source project."

The new application also showcases the power and breadth of Pentaho's open source BI capabilities to address the challenges of real-world applications and databases. Like many operational systems, Bugzilla's operational data schema is complex, and optimized for operational tracking of software defects rather than reporting and analysis. Because Pentaho provides data integration capabilities, Pentaho is able to extract, transform, and even enrich the data so that trends and patterns can be analyzed, and new metrics derived. In this way, Pentaho provides an elegant solution to a host of complex, real-world problems that organizations must address to fully realize the benefits of business intelligence. And in terms of delivering information to end-users, Pentaho also provides static and dynamic reports, automated e-mail distribution of standardized reports, and interactive dimensional analysis to address a wide range of end-user needs.

"We're really looking forward to using this new application," said Scott Westfall, Director of Product Development at SlickEdit Inc. "Bugzilla is great at providing us with volumes of data, and that data really only becomes actionable information when used in conjunction with Pentaho's Software Quality Reporting application. Because this solution was built on Pentaho's BI platform, it provides a broad range of capabilities and is very easy to customize and extend."

A new sourceforge project has been created to distribute this solution, and to enable community-based evolution of the project. Software Quality Reports is available today and interested users can access the project at http://sourceforge.net/projects/qareports, or link to it from www.pentaho.org/download/latest. The application, as well as the source code are available under the Mozilla Public License and requires the Pentaho 1.2 RC2 or later. Clarise Z Doval Santos and Joseph di Paolantonio from InterActive Systems & Consulting, Inc. have also published a podcast interview with Nicholas Goodman and Lance Walter of Pentaho that provides more details on the project. The podcast is available through the TeleInterActive Press at: press.teleinteractive.net/oss/2006/09/14/pentaho_sqr_for_bugzilla
